About OXBRYTA ®

In September 2024, drugmaker Pfizer announced that it is voluntarily withdrawing all lots of Oxbryta (voxelotor) for the treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD) in all markets where it is available. Pfizer stated their decision is based on clinical data that shows that the overall benefit of Oxbryta no longer outweighs the risk in the approved sickle cell patient population.

According to the FDA, clinical trials conducted by Pfizer reported a higher rate of vaso-occlusive crisis (severe pain caused by sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues) in patients with sickle cell disease receiving Oxbryta compared to placebo. There were also more deaths in the Oxbryta treatment group as compared to the placebo group in these studies.

Reuters has reported that Pfizer is advising patients to contact their physicians to discuss alternative treatment, and that it would further review the available data and had notified regulatory authorities about its findings.
